Cancun Flats

The well-known resort of Cancun is a great setting for the warm weather travelers. The visiting angler can experience a wide variety of shallow water/flats species.

The area of Isla Blanca is quite pristine and is home to many different species of birds, including rarely seen species. Cancun flats fishermen have a very good chance at getting a super grand slam (tarpon, snook, bonefish and permit) in a few days of fishing. This is light tackle flats fishing at its best for both the fly fisherman and conventional angler. Cancun is known to be primarily a tarpon and snook fishery all year round with best chances at bonefish and permit occurring in the summer months.

The Cancun flats fishing area produces fish all year, but the winter months, due to weather, leave the flats sparse for bonefish and permit. All other species are present throughout the year. Species of fish include bonefish, tarpon, snook, permit, snapper, barracuda and sea trout.

Targeted species are:

  • Tarpon (10-40 lbs)
  • Permit (4-30 lbs)
  • Snook (5-25 lbs)
  • Bonefish (3-6 lbs)
  • Jack (3-35 lbs)
  • Sea trout (1-7 lbs)
  • Snapper (1-15 lbs)
  • Barracuda (2-35 lbs)
  • Baby shark (3-35 lbs)

Peak Months: March through September
